SPINNING OLYMPICS
August 19, 2006 - 1 -4 p.m. Our Third Annual Spinning Olympics EVENTS:"It’s About Even Yarn!" Competitors have to determine the best weight to spin the given fiber, spin the fibers within the 4 minute time frame and produce the most consistent even yarn.Materials: Soy Silk, your wheel or spindle. Judging: Judges will eye for consistency, points (.5) taken off for each break. Thick Yarn Drop Competitors are given prepared fibers to produce the thickest most consistent even yarn using a drop spindle.Materials: Jacob, drop spindle. Judging: Judges will eye for consistency, points (.5) taken off for each break. Speedy Spinster Competitors have to determine the best weight to spin the fiber, spin the fiber within the 4 minute time frame and produce the maximum yardage.Materials: Adams Farm Mohair Cloud, your wheel or spindle. Judging: Yarn winded onto cards of the same size and wraps are counted, points (.5) taken off for each break. ![]() Fiber All Around Fiber identification - 20 fibers are taped to index cards - sheet with possible answers provided - more possibilities than the 20 fibers!Materials: Pencils or pens. Judging: Number of correct answers. Most Balanced Yarn Competitors will be given prepared fiber and spin for 10 minutes to spin singles and ply them to produce the most balanced skein of yarn.Materials: Fine Mohair Top, your wheel or spindle. Judging: Judges rule on degree to which yarn is balanced. If all are balanced judges then choose based on nices looking ply job, points (.5) taken off for each break. ![]() Team Spinning Competitors team up for this fun event. One person treadles (or twists) and another person stands and drafts, pulling backward. Be the first one over the finish line!Materials: Blue Faced Leicester, one wheel or hookie stick. Spinners’ Triathlon This is a three part competitionPart 1 - Spin for 2 minutes. Part 2 - Spin for 2 minutes wearing plastic gloves. Part 3 - Spin for 2 minutes blindfolded. Materials: Alpaca, your wheel or spindle. Judging: Yarn winded onto cards of the same size and wraps are counted, points (.5) taken off for each break. ![]() ![]() Musical Spinning Rainbow Competitors will choose a color of fiber that they will spin throughout. Moving from one person’s spinning equipment to another when the music stops.Materials: Bullen’s Wullens, your wheel or spindle. Judging: Yarn winded onto cards of the same size and wraps are counted, points (.5) taken off for each break.
Spinning Qualifiers Competitors identify the parts of a drop spindle, wheel, and types of spindles and wheels. Try to get as many correct as you can in 5 minutes.Materials: Pencils or pens. Judging: Number of correct answers. Mystery Event Event to be announced!JUDGING:Judges to be announced. All judging and tie breaking is at their discretion. PRIZES:A gold place award for each event, overall prizes are for gold, silver, and bronze. Prizes are from the Adams Farm Store, Quilt and Fiber Arts Loft. ![]() REGISTRATION FEES:Each event is just $2.00. If you were to do all ten events it would cost $20. You will receive $5.00 off if you register for all ten events prior to August 17, 2006. Fees include all fiber and help offset the prizes.
